Promoting & supporting the humane care of animals in Thurston County
The Thurston County Humane Society was incorporated in 1917 under the laws of the State of Washington. In 1966, a group of dedicated animal advocates began fundraising efforts to establish a modern animal shelter. Thanks to the generosity of the private sector and in-kind donations, their goal was realized, and the shelter opened its doors in 1968. It was initially located in downtown Olympia at the current site of the LOTT plant. Through service contracts, the Humane Society provided animal control services to the cities of Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, as well as the towns of Tenino, Yelm, Rainier, and Bucoda, including unincorporated areas of Thurston County. For nearly a decade, the shelter operated with a small paid staff and volunteers. In 1977, the City of Lacey assumed management of the shelter, which is now known as Animal Services. The four governing agencies, collectively referred to as JASCOM, oversee operations. The Humane Society remains active in promoting responsible pet ownership programs and continues to collaborate with Animal Services and other animal welfare organizations to address the needs of the community.
